Scarlet's West Indian Sorrel
Scarlet's West Indian Sorrel
Sorrel is a drink typically consumed in the Caribbean and Africa. Trinidadians and Jamaicans in particular make this during the holidays and for most it evokes memories of the Christmas season. Made from Hibiscus Roselles, not to be confused with the green leafy plant of the same name, sorrel drink has a dark rich crimson color and has flavors of orange peel, ginger, all spice, cane sugar and many warming spices. It is the perfect holiday drink, served ice cold on ice, mixed with beer or rum or just straight. It comes presweetened but is intended to be consumed with ice, as the dilution balances the sweetness or dilute it to suit your taste. It is the perfect balance of sweetness (from the cane sugar), a slight acidity (an almost tart cranberry like flavor) and heat (from the ginger and spices).
